Peter Delany, MSW, PhD, LCSW-C

Dr. Peter Delany provides compassionate, evidence-informed care for adults, adolescents, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, substance use, grief, and other life challenges. With more than 40 years of clinical experience, he tailors treatment to the unique needs and goals of each client.

A licensed clinical social worker, Dr. Delany draws on a wide range of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioral therapies, neurolinguistic programming, clinical hypnotherapy, intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy, and grief counseling. His approach is strengths-based and recovery-oriented, grounded in the belief that individuals have the capacity for growth, healing, and sustained change.

Before joining Behrens & Associates, Dr. Delany served for over 26 years in the U.S. Public Health Service, attaining the rank of Rear Admiral. He deployed nationally as part of the federal disaster response team from 1993 to 2008. His prior clinical roles include appointments at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda Naval Hospital, Arlington Hospital Outpatient Services, and Montgomery County’s Addiction Treatment Programs.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Delany is an Associate Research Professor at The Catholic University of America’s National Catholic School of Social Service, where he directs the Community-Based Integrated Substance Use Training Program. His academic work focuses on behavioral health services research, workforce development, and recovery-oriented systems of care. He has also held faculty appointments at George Mason University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
