Gavin W. Behrens, MSW, LCSW-C

With over 35 years of clinical experience, I specialize in helping individuals navigate anxiety, depression, and relationship conflicts. My expertise includes addictive behaviors, school and work performance issues, attention-deficit concerns, and personality issues.

My approach combines psychodynamic principles with cognitive behavioral strategies. Treatment plans are tailored to the individual’s goals and needs, whether the focus is on short – term symptom relief or deeper, long-term growth.

Clinical and administrative roles have included emergency room crisis assessment, outpatient mental health centers, substance abuse services, and therapeutic schools. I work extensively with men of all ages as well as children and adolescents experiencing academic, social, or family difficulties.

I trained at the Washington – Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and have additional training in Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP), Mentalization Based Psychotherapy (MBT), and General Psychiatric Management (GPM). I earned my Master’s Degree in Social Work from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, have taught at the University of Massachusetts and The Catholic University of America, and currently teach therapists at the New Washington School of Psychiatry.

I value a holistic approach that integrates preventive health principles. I believe that a relational model that is flexible, responsive and rigorous best serves my patients.
